Bosch Rexroth PC control opens the gate to new applications in production

The trend towards Connected Industry is accelerating. With the new IndraMotion MLC control version based on an industrial PC, Bosch Rexroth has merged the PLC-based motion logic system with the Windows world. Machine manufacturers can now combine IT programs and real-time motion control on one powerful hardware. Through the combination of standards for the Internet of Things, such as web-based technologies, high-level languages and Ethernet-based communication protocols, as well as Windows-based applications, the control opens up access to a variety of new applications. The software-based Open Core Engineering solution portfolio has thus been extended by an additional building block which bridges the gap between PLC and IT automation.

Until now, tasks have been clearly divided for complex applications. In order to capture analysis data, measurement data and quality data quickly, a PC is required for the process and a separate control for automation. That increases system costs, and the data exchange between both hardware control systems lengthens the cycle times. With the new form of IndraMotion MLC, Bosch Rexroth has put an end to this separation. On an industrial PC, the manufacturer can combine a motion logic system on the basis of IEC 61131-3, real-time motion functions and robotics with the Windows 7 operating system installed in parallel. The operating systems work completely independently of one another and exchange information extremely quickly. Depending on the application, the industrial PC increases the computing speed by up to 100% and can connect up to 99 servo drives via the Ethernet-based automation bus Sercos as central intelligence.

Hardware and software open to Connected Industry

The IPC control system opens up new possibilities for implementing Connected Industry approaches. The user can use both motion logic and Windows-based functions at the same time. Like all IndraMotion variants, the PC-based solution allows further access to all key functions of the control system via high-level languages, through the interface technology Open Core Interface. In doing this, manufacturers of measuring machines, for example, can use the software LabVIEW to program their processes and to control motion with over 550 Virtual Instruments (VIs) – and this without having to write a single line of PLC code.

Fast engineering

The IPC control system is fully compatible with the existing controller-based variants of IndraMotion MLC and includes a scalable system firmware for motion logic applications. For the controller variants, produced programs can be easily transferred to the new hardware. Predefined function toolkits, such as condition monitoring or technology functions, replace complicated programming with simple parameterization. The integrated engineering environment IndraWorks accelerates the whole PLC-based engineering process on the basis of open standards. Furthermore, the control system automatically takes into account all the special characteristics of fluid technology and simplifies the implementation of electro-hydraulic drives.

One Java to connect them all

Programmers are now also developing directly on Rexroth controls with the globally established Java technology in parallel with PLC automation. Java programming allows for quick implementation of individual applications on the IndraMotion MLC control platform, simple connection to higher-level IT systems and linking with cloud-based services. Programmers no longer have to write any PLC code for this.
